SUSTAINABILITY
- Acheiving an Ecological Balance
Sustainability
in Architecture has become essential.
It must be considered at all stages of design.
It should not override or be the raison d’être of the Architecture
but should be integral and integrated.
Knott Architects takes a holistic approach to sustainability.
Good Architecture will allow for ‘greening’ without compromising
the Concept of the Design.
Ultimately the way forward is towards buildings that produce zero (or
even negative) carbon emissions in their production and use.
Alternative
energy sources, well
insulated fabric, an airtight envelope, orientation,
green
or brown roofs, thermal
mass, passive solar gain and shading, low
energy use, high efficiency fittings and appliances, recycling/reuse
of waste (grey) water and rain water, passive
stack ventilation, heat pumps, harvesting
solar or wind energy, flexibility
of use and layout over lifecycle, recyclability…
…are all to be considered and used where appropriate and efficient.
